| the R1 had its maiden crawl session last night in an open area where i saw rocks piled up ...... RC Crawling is a different rush ...... highly addicting i may add ...... the Goat 3s esc performed to its reputation .... fantastic drag brake ..... the 18.5 Ballistic had torque and it complimented very well with the JR DS8411 ultra torque servo ...... the HB rovers are just amazingly sticky and soft just enough to catch traction ..... i had a blast driving it ........ anyone up for crawling sessions in hatta? | |

| got my DIG unit installed ..... DIG mounted on tranny DIG installed in the R1 ... a peek from the rear moved all my electronics to the front so i can have my battery pack in-board ..... one problem was that the ESC needed some vent .... i added some spacers to the hood panels to give the GOAT some space to breathe updated pics | |

| Got some Rock Crawling time in Ras Al Khaimah ...... The crawl spot looked good ..... beach side ..... its just so relaxing to crawl at the same time here the waves coming in the shore ...... the rocks were a bit slippery compared to my crawl spot in Al Ain but ...... crawl time is always fun time ..... the crawl spot just parallel the main road after entering RAK ... as to compared to my regular spot here in al ain .... i still enjoy the lines that the rock mountains of Al Ain has to offer ..... and its 5 mins away from where i stay .... some DUNE shots | |

| Strawb, can you measure the mounting holes on the gear box for me? I want to see if the R1 gearbox will fit into the Joker chassis. The joker chassis is designed for the CR-01 gearbox but I have the RC4WD R2 box in it and it is not ideal. It is impossible to get a CR-01 gearbox on it's own so I was thinking about the R1, it is a decent price at US$38. But it may be a non-starter with the R1 haivng the reduction in the portals...
Let me know if you can send me the measurements...
Cheers | |

| hi andy ..... dimensions are 37mm left to right and 23mm front to back .... dimensions are eye to eye centered in the tranny holes!!!
the R1 tranny is a bit wider than its base by around say 20mm - 25mm .... so a thinner skid plate and wider side panels would work perfect ...
hope this helps

| Strawb, thanks for posting those dimensions. It seems that the holes on my Joker are further apart. A good thing in that I can always drill more holes in my skid plate, and it also means that the gearbox SHOULD fit in. The Joker has an odd setup where one side of the chassis plates is closed, and the other is open. This was done to accomodate the CR-01 gearbox, and works nicely with the R2 as well. It also means that the truck has a narrow width, but can still have a bigger tranny....
I think I will have to investigate the R1 a bit before I pull the trigger....options right now are: Stay with the R2 - a bit of a waste, dont need 2 speed Swap R2 for CR-01 box - CR-01 boxes are hard to come by as they are not sold as unit parts by Tamiya Buy R1 - Need to do more research on it, it is untested by the masses up until now, the reduction on the portals of the R1 buggy means it may have gearing limits on a std truck.
Yours looks cool, but how much is left of the original truck???? | |
