Mini Set Up For Pro RC Empty
PostSubject: Mini Set Up For Pro RC   Mini Set Up For Pro RC EmptySun Jul 22, 2012 3:29 pm

Hi,
Lets get a thread going to work out how to get our minis working on the ProRC Track, its seems like everything we thought we knew does not work -

Low cars - fail
Slick tyres - fail
Harder springs - fail
etc etc etc

Of the four cars I took this week, one was able to lap consistently without flipping or spinning out, it was my rally car which I have setup for running on interlock. At Meydan it could barely hold onto the back of a pack of minis but at ProRC it works like a dream.

Here is the basic setup -

Ride height - 15mm (10mm more than most)
Springs - 3-Racing black springs all around
Tyres - Yeah Racing

At the moment I think its mostly the tyres, they are big for m-chassis tyres and so are able to ride over the bumps without digging in. On most surfaces they do not have much grip, but on the treated ProRC Track they have a really nice balance of grip.

The car is also using a heavy old Nicad, I will try the same set up with a LIPO Next week and if that works I will lower and stiffen the car until it stops working.

Anyone else found something that works ?

Duane.

Guys,

Herewith, revealing my secrets for the M04, which works very well at Wonderland.
No sweat for a silver can and more enjoyable on sport tuned motor. It become really challenging when 23T is used very happy :

1) shocks
a) 2 hole pistons and 35 - 40 WT oil front and rear.
b) front 1 level softer than rear. I use yellow front and blue at the rear
c) front uptravel and downtravel limiters, down travel 4mm, uptravel 2mm
(downtravel goes inside shock, uptravel goes outside shock on shaft)
d) rear uptravel and downtravel limiters, down travel 4mm, uptravel 3mm

The reason the front needs up and down travel limiters is to limit the droop (less front droop means increased on power steering). Otherwise at full suspension compression, the front tires toe in too much causing the car to push, and there is too much camber causing the tire to wear unevenly. Same thing for the rear, but it is more to limit camber change

2) Smooth diff at the back, either gear or ball diff (TA03). Use anti wear grease inside the gear diff.

3) 1 degree toe out in the front (the toe out turns to neutral as the suspension is compressed in a corner)

4) 2 degree toe in blocks in the rear for better rotation.

5) S Grips with hard foam inserts in the front (s grips must be in good shape or the car will drift on the straights), A Slicks with hard foam inserts in the rear
Tried the 60 size Pit Shimizu, they're great! Hard at the front and medium at the rear

From a tire perspective, I reckon the RIDE 3035's will always be very hard to beat. Great grip, long wearing and they have curved edges which will minimise traction roll.

The new kids on the block are the pit shimizu's, good range from Hard, Medium, Soft and Super Soft. On the M04 the super softs on the rear are good, but I made the mistake of putting them on the front too....not good. Need some understeer at the front. For a M03 I am not sure what would work best, but I would be inclined to put the Super Soft on the rear and then either a Medium or Hard on the front. With a tight front diff, you are less likely to spin the inside wheel so maybe Medium. The advantage of the shimizu's is that they have a larger diameter, less acceleration, but more top end......on the ProRC track I would think that the top end might be advantageous in mini racing.....

my current set up is still the same. only changed is the internal gears (due to crash) but all is good. i'll be running the mini on saturday with new ride inch up tires which is about the same size as the tamiya M and S grip.

sad that the x-pattern of HPI for mini is very hard to have nowadays but they are good with minis.

The bigger ride tyres sound good, I can see a lot of those in a future batch.

I think the Pit Shimizu's are the same diameter as well,....60mm.

PostSubject: Re: Mini Set Up For Pro RC   Mini Set Up For Pro RC EmptyMon Jul 23, 2012 11:15 pm

I've used the inch-up rims and tires last weekday(s) they seem to hug the asphalt pretty well.
I've put the 38s upfront and 32s on the rear. The 38s that I've got were not round so I had to keep them on the front.. I'm not sure though 'coz the 32s seems to be the softer ones with the feel. No traction roll during the runs. Actually I don't remember traction rolling my mini with whatever tires I use. Maybe because the M-05 really has a lower center of gravity than the M-03. I've kept the electronics on the wall of the servo keeping the weight closer to the middle.

If only the driver would keep it together.. laughing

A warning on these tires & rims though..
They were a bit hard to set properly and keeping them "centered" was really a PITA.
I even used a tire gluing helper. Maybe it's because of them being LP.

Or maybe I was doing it wrong and you guys may have better luck.
