What is the difference between these "silver cans"? Empty
PostSubject: What is the difference between these "silver cans"?   What is the difference between these "silver cans"? EmptyTue Aug 31, 2010 3:46 am

I was finding out how much silver can motors cost, so I could get a new one and break it in properly, but now I'm confused...

Dull silver can
Shiny silver can
Really shiny silver can

What I want to know is, what are the differences? The third one came with my TA, the first one came with my TT, and with my M05.

Thanks.

Thanks.

I don't know.
I thought maybe this was like those spot the difference puzzles in the paper.

Do I win a prize if I spot the 10 difference?

The dull one has a square hole in it.

How many is that?

OK,

Dull silver can - not sure about this one. It's not very shiny so I wouldn't buy it.
shiny silver can - Johnson 540-J
really shiny silver can - Mabuchi 540-SH

I'm not familiar with the first one, but the other two I'm pretty sure are effectively the same. I purchase a silver can from RC Mart month ago when they had the 540-J.

I was surprised when it arrived since it had different end-bell than I had seen before. You can see in the link you gave (the picture on RC Mart is same for both can, but I got one that looks like your shiny one).

I think maybe Johnson have changed their end-bell since I don't remember ever seeing one like this before, and these two company been making them for ever.

none have bearings. If you have 3 silver can, you are good. You don't need another one. I have only owned one that I got with my mini, and it is still going good after 12+ months hard use.

Where is my cookie?

There are some better pictures here.
Johnson and Mabuchi 540

Still not sure about your Dull one. It could be johnson motor, it has the square hole.

Is this an open PM? laughing

I think the "dull" one is another type of Mabuchi.. They're also known as the "red dot" silver cans. They maybe the latest batch of Mabuchi silver can motors. Most of the new kits come with these now specially the TT-01 series and the M-05s. Probably cutting down costs from polishing the motor. very happy

Hi, I read somewhere years ago that the red dot motor was the one to get if you could, does it have a fan on the armature ?

Duane.

I thought that these 'red dot' silver cans had been tuned (tampered with) by someone and then resold onto the market. Many clubs ban them.

Hmmnn..

I'm not too sure.

This is what I was referring to as a "red dot" silver can

What is the difference between these "silver cans"? Tamiya-m05-pro-2

Notice the polarity indicator (red dot) on the motor..

The one from Johnson comes with a white dot as well as the other Mabuchi motor with a really shiny can since their endbells were black and a white dot would be easily seen.

Hmmmm

After quick inspection of all silver can in house, I can confirm they both have red dot. One each of mabuchi and johnson.
The one's here http://vortec.defmondo.com/?q=node/29 both have white dot.

I don't think it means anything.......
They are all the same......
except some are shinier than others and some have red or white dots........ dntknw

Yep.. I think we all agree that there is no evident difference between these types of silver cans. You just have to pray that you get lucky with your purchased motor and have a "better than normal" silver can.

@Abdul, when you're breaking-in your motor, make sure the whole "area" of the brush is touching the commutator before you stop. It's what other people call "bedding" as from what I've read in other sites. It makes the motor draw more power and will actually help your motor run smoother and last longer. It works for me.
